We all have probably attended church some, and know a couple church hymns, but as the world is changing… with each generation the style of music we listen to does as well. With the rise in popularity of Christian Rock Bands and the music genres of today’s worship… it has become a sub-industry of the overall music industry as a whole. Many talented Rockers who grew up with a strong faith… are now Christian Rockers!

One of the first successful Christian Rock Bands to ever come on the Christian music scene was Petra.

This iconic Christian Rock Band’s name is from the Greek word for “rock”. Petra was started back in 1972 by their guitarist Bob Hartman, who attended the Christian Training Center in Fort Wayne, IN at that time. Several of his fellow students …guitarist/vocalist Greg Hough, bassist John DeGroff, and drummer Bill Glover, joined the band, and the Band began playing around the Indiana – Midwest area.

Petra was not received very well at first by churches that believed rock & roll was demonic and had no place in a Christian’s life. Despite this resistance…the band became popular with young believers, and won a recording contract with Word Records (a subsidiary of Myrrh Records) in 1973. read more…

Christian rock music has become very diverse with many other sub-genres contained within the rock category. In the late 1960s the “Jesus Movement” inspired the first serious Christian Bands of the rock scene, but then in the 1970s Christian rock bands began to move away from the demonic image associated with rock music, and began to create Christian lyrics with rock music sounds.

Christian music has always been viewed as contemporary in each generation over the last few centuries when Martin Luther re-introduced and encouraged music in worship. Since then most hymns have been inspired by those who want to express their faith commitment, and encourage others to follow Jesus, and his example. As each generation’s artists and songwriters composed these songs, they were considered the contemporary genre of the time. Some Sacred Hymns have become timeless though and are still included in worship today.

Even in the 21st Century Christian Rock Bands truly represent the changing style of music that Christian youth and adults as well have come to embrace. Contemporary Christian music today is in step with music styles and yet still contains the same traditional Christian message in the lyrics.

Although many started out as “Christian Bands” some have succumbed to the temptation of lucrative recording contracts that encourage them to cross over and seemingly conflict with their faith. Nevertheless… today other Christian rock artists seem to be more devoted to their Christian Faith than others. Then there are those who have returned to their roots of faith after a career as avid and successful Secular Rockers. Such is the case with the band U2 who began to become recognized as Christian Rockers in the 1990s. Their enormous success began in the 1980s as Secular Rockers.

Christian Music Videos have become a great venue for artistic expression, as well as visually enhancing the message contained in the songs. With quality and budgets comparable to the secular music industry…Christian Rock Bands have been able to share the message of salvation to many who would otherwise not listen to any preacher.

“Skillet” was formed in 1996 after two other bands dissolved and John Cooper and Ken Steorts decided to try to blend their different styles of music together.  This mix  seemed to work and thus the name Skillet was used for the new band.   While they have been dubbed the hardest working touring  band in Christian Rock… they have still managed to record many Albums including their best selling album recorded in 2000 called “Invincible“. This lighter alternative rock and style was to become their unique sound, and they are now set to release their 9th Record album in 2013.

“Rebirthing” was on their “Comatose” Album Featured below:

Contemporary Christian Music simply refers to those songs and the music artists who compose, arrange, and perform with more musical instruments than just a piano or Organ. Yes… the tempo and overall arrangement is upbeat and sometimes “punchy”, but the biblical accuracy in the message and lyrics seems to be consistent with most “Real Christian Artists”. Contemporary Christian Music continues to be sung by church worship teams, and is still popular with millions young and older believers around the world. The Top Christian Songs of today are different than those of even just 20 years ago, but the passion for finding a real life changing encounter with God.

With the vast technology improvements since the 1960’s…Christian music albums have reached the ears and hearts of music lovers in every nation on earth. Christian Rap Artists/Hip Hop/R&B

One of the most unique genres of this generation’s list of Christian rock music is Christian hip hop, or sometimes called Gospel Rap. This style has not been received that well in the past because of the stigma of the secular mainstream image and content of rap artists and songs.

Secular Rap Artists began to emerge back in the early 1980’s with songs that were very popular with gangs and the inner city culture. These songs made clear their views and lifestyle. Many songs were recorded with a violent and angry message contained in the lyrics.

Many Hip Hop/Rap Artists began to show up in the news after being arrested for possession of drugs and assault charges. This genre quickly became associated with the darker side of urban city cultures, and if you were one of a small list Christian Rap Artists at that time… it became a challenge to win the acceptance of the Christian community.

The New book released in 2010 “DeCoded” by Jay Z, has attempted to dispel some of this, but this genre definitely has its controversy, and it has been more difficult for Christian Rap Artists to get their message of faith out to Christians.

Then in the 1990s DC Talk became one of the first Christian Rock Bands to perform Christian Rap as a primary performing style. DC Talk, who first came on the Christian music scene in the late 1980’s found that their hip hop and rap was another fantastic genre to minister to Urban city gangs and other youth looking for an inspirational Christian message in Pop and Hip Hop Music.

Some of the most current Christian Hip Hop Artists are: ” Da’ Truth”, “Lecrae”, “Group 1 Crew”, ”Toby Mac”, “Trip Lee”, “Manafest”, and more.

Back in 1970 myself and 3 other guys started a Cristian Rock Band called “Selah”.  at times it was fun and very rewarding for me. We all took this seriously as a music ministry, and our band was booked up most of the time over a period of 3 years.  I had a few hours of fame, met some great people, and made some great friends.  We saw many people come to know Jesus as well!!… That is what it is all about!  Eventually we all went our separate ways, and the Band did not stay together.

But… In looking back there are definitely some things that we could have done differently. I will try to give all of you just starting out… some of my best stuff on this subject. You will need to get a few things right in the beginning for your bandto be ready for the challenges it will face on the road to spreading the gospel through music!

I have experienced this in real time… So Listen Up!… We maybe able to save you some serious heartburn.

Where to Start?

1. Meet with your future band members, and layout the details of what you all consider to be your goals. First, define your short range goals.

MOST IMPORTANTLY!…Make sure that you all hare the same vision, and are all focused on serving Christ with all of your heart!

Many aspiring musicians and newbie’s do not realize how much of a commitment it takes from everyone in the band for this to work.

(Goals that you will make and try to complete in the next 6-12 months)

Do some brainstorming with a clear head and talk about what each of you expect as Band Members. The obvious topics will be Music styles, who will sing lead, back-up and such. Then there is the business end of the Band. Who will be the leader of this Band and take the responsibility of becoming your representative to the outside world?. Who will do your bookings, and organize the financial matters?

You will need to define what you will need in terms of Guitars, Keyboards, and other Music Gear in order to be the best you can be in your Genre without trying to feed too many mouths.

2. Your commitment to a rehearsal schedule will be a BIG FACTOR.

Get this right and your band will always get tighter both musically and spiritually.   Get this wrong… and you will all become burned out on the band before it even has a chance to make it! Band members who do not have good work ethics will also never be good enough to keep up with those who do and have a vision of greatness and commitment for the band.

I Will Now Challenge You… If you will take the time to find out how each of you really tics, and how each potential band member sees this whole experience in the big picture as it relates to winning the lost for Jesus. You will also begin to see the best or the worst come out of your fellow band members, and you will soon find out that one or more of you is not up to the task of doing what it takes to become a great Band in music ministry in the future. This may be a little painful now… but it can become devastating to the success of the band at a later date.

3. The other BIG FACTOR in starting a band is of course the start up costs.

It will be necessary for each potential band member to have their own Amps, Mics and other gear, and you will weed out the wannabe’s if this is a requirement.

Song choices will be the next challenge. At first you should just perform easier songs that will give you all a chance to get to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses (musically speaking of course).

4. Finding a good place to rehearse that is private will become VITAL.

You do not want all of your friends to know where you rehearse! If you do make this known… you will find yourself trying to keep your rehearsals from becoming interrupted by well meaning friends and family.

In the end it will just take time! If your band can stand the test of time… and you all can stand each other… you may become successful and enjoy a great career as a Performing Artist!!

If you think we can help… drop us an email… We like to give input to new aspiring artists on these topics. Also… post your comment below.

Larry Norman was one of the very first Christian Rock, songwriters, and Artists coined by many as the “Father of Christian Rock Music.” The Conservative Christian Evangelical leadership of the time did not understand Larry Norman, and his unique musical message was not received well. He became characterized as a bit radical in the culture of the early 70’s, but he continued to boldly craft each of his songs to express his lyrical views on the political, and religious world.

His release of his 1969 solo album “Upon This Rock” was considered the first Christian Rock Album to be produced.  It was followed by his 1972 release “Only Visiting This Planet”, which is still viewed as one of the best albums in Christian Rock Music. His music was said to have an impact on other well known artists to follow such as U2, John Mellencamp.

Larry Norman was born in 1947 in Corpus Christi, Texas. When he was just nine years old, he began his writing and performing career with some original rock and roll songs he shared at school. Soon he began recording with Capitol Records and performed concerts supporting The Doors, The Who, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix, among others.

His solo albums recorded in the 1970s on his own independent label Solid Rock, laid the foundation for what would eventually become the Christian rock music industry, a genre which largely shunned him and his music. According to Portland news/radio station KXL, Norman’s early expression of social and spiritual issues, was not received by many conservative Christians. There was a widespread ban on Norman’s music, which is still in effect today, with some Christian stores. Larry once said: “The churches weren’t going to accept me looking like a street person with long hair and faded jeans. They did not like the music I was recording. And I had no desire to preach the gospel to the converted.”

Time Magazine called Larry Norman “the most significant artist in his field.” Pop Music Artists Petula Clark, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Black, and Cliff Richard have all performed and recorded his songs. Some of his songs have also been recorded by Christian artists like DC Talk, Rebecca St. James, and Audio Adrenaline. Larry Norman performed for The White House, twice – and in Moscow at the 80,000 seat Olympic Stadium. With a career spanning over 40 years, Norman has released close to100 solo albums.

In 1990, CCM magazine voted his album “Only Visiting This Planet” as the greatest Christian album ever recorded. But Norman was really never accepted by the mainstream evangelicals. Larry Norman was honored with his induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2001. Larry Norman passed away in early 2008. Before his death, he was producing an album with Frank Black and Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse.

This was his written message the day before he passed away:

“I feel like a prize in a box of cracker jacks with God’s hand reaching down to pick me up. I have been under medical care for months. My wounds are getting bigger. I have trouble breathing. I am ready to fly home. I won’t be here much longer. I can’t do anything about it. My heart is too weak. I want to say goodbye to everyone. In the past you have generously supported me with prayer and finance and we will probably still need financial help. My plan is to be buried in a simple pine box with some flowers inside. I’d like to push back the darkness with my bravest effort. There will be funeral information posted on my website, in case some of you want to attend. We are not sure of the date when I will die. Goodbye, farewell, we will meet again. “Goodbye, farewell, we’ll meet again somewhere beyond the sky. I pray that you will stay with God Goodbye, my friends, goodbye.” – Larry Norman

Their first album was released in 1974, and was much like the styles of other bands like Boston & The Eagles, and Journey with a tamer sound than the iconic more driving Rock sound that they would be known for in the years to come. “Come and Join Us”, did not appear until 1977, and it featured lead vocalist Greg Volz, with a hard rock flavor.

Over the next several years… they changed band members some and around 1980 the Band members that would forge the next several years of what Petra is so well known for contained: Hartman, Volz, keyboardist John Slick, bassist Mark Kelly, and drummer Louie Weaver.

The albums Never Say Die (1981), More Power To Ya (1982), and Not of This World (1983) became big hits for the Band, who were rewarded with a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Gospel Group and two Dove Award nominations in 1984.

In 1985 keyboardist John Lawry replaced Slick, and In 1986, Greg Volz left Petra for a solo career.   Head East’s lead singer John Schlitt became their lead vocalist as Petra continued to gain in popularity throughout years into the 21st century.  Then in 2005 they completed their farewell tour which seemed to be the end of Petra.  For the next few years John Schlitt began to record a solo compilation of more subtle music than he performed with Petra.

Then in 2010 they got back together for “Heaven Fest 2010”.  They continue to schedule performances with some select concert events going into 2011.  Petra has really stood the test of time, and could probably earn the title of the Best Known and loved Christian Rock Band of the Century!
